Bike Right 9

Wooler – 24-26 October 2003

Bike Right 9 was upon us.  Yet again I skipped away early from work, and caught the train south to Berwick-upon-Tweed.   Mike-the-Moulton and I passed the journey catching up on our activities over the summer and rode to Wooler in a twinkle of blinking lights and small wheels.  Many were in residence when we arrived, and the air was thick with the smell of food, laughter, stories, and fountains of red wine as Seamus vigorously uncorked yet another bottle.

Saturday dawned, and all but one of us gathered for the day’s rides.  Jason was desperately trying to free his bike from the industrial zip-ties that some kind soul had used to secure it.  Oh, how we laughed as we stood around watching and offering advice.

I chose the family ride that day.  My transport for the weekend was a Brompton (thanks to the fact that British Railways is an oxymoron), and I did not wish to risk one of Jason’s 70-mile long epics on such a machine.  As the first tea stop was just 8 miles down the road I was not disappointed with my choice.  A quick visit to Flodden, lunch at Etal and a delightful return ride on deserted roads got us home just before the rain set in.  Typically, Jason’s ride was just long enough to get everyone wet.

Sunday was Sunday, so tradition dictated that we ride to Kirk Yetholm for lunch.  Rain showers passed, but the views of the Cheviots were crystal clear.

And so passed another Bike Right.  Excellent fun as always.

I’ll see you all at Bike Right 9.5

Leaving lunch, or maybe it was morning coffee.

After the first few stops you start to lose track.

Roads were covered with standing water, mud, and cow shit.

Aren’t you glad you have mudguards !

Weather was a marked improvement on the previous year though

Bike Right 9.5 is 13-15 February 2004.
